Founders Message: Southern Poverty Law Center

Small wonder that residents of Richmond, New Hampshire - and beyond - are so concerned about the Saint Benedict Center cult.

In his Nazi-like rage against the Jews, Brother Anthony Mary has called them the "synagogue of Satan." The SBC wants to portray Jews as being somehow less than human - EVEN DEMONIC. Brother Andre Marie paints the Jews as being somehow immoral, saying that they "undermine public morals."

So for SBC members, the Jews are devils from Satan's synagogue who are trying to ruin public morals. That is only a small step away from advocating the killing of Jews. Once you demonize an entire group of people and see them as being somehow subhuman or even DEMONIC, it becomes very easy to rationalize violence against that group. Could this be why SBC members train in karate and why automatic weapons have been heard on SBC grounds?

  2. Is this for real? I'm shocked at the depth of antisemitism you report from SBC. I used to receive thier periodical and there's no hint of this printed in there. Does the bishop know about this? Have these guys been excommunicated? Weren't they (Feeney's followers) at one time excommunicated?

  3. Sanctus Belle, the anti-Semitism of the Saint Benedict Center (in Richmond NH) is all too real and for many, all too disturbing. Some of my posts here at La Salette Journey have been forwarded to the Diocese of Manchester.

This group in Richmond has not been excommunicated as of yet. However, the Diocese of Manchester has stated on several occasions that the SBC is not in union with the Diocese. They operate without the Bishop's permission and His Excellency, The Most Rev. John B. McCormack, has expressed his outrage against some of the anti-Semitic remarks made by members of the SBC.

  4. The following is taken from an article at the SPLC website:

"This kind of ugly rhetoric earned the Slaves a sharp rebuke in 2004 from Bishop John B. McCormack of Manchester, N.H., who called their teachings "blatantly anti-Semitic" and "offensive to all people of good will." That didn't stop the Slaves' Brother Anthony Mary, while lecturing at the 2005 St. Joseph Forum's conference, from describing the "Jewish nation" as "the perpetual enemy of Christ" and saying that the Virgin Mary had threatened the Jews with "blood and terror if it's required."

Clearly, the Bishop of Manchester needs to be a little more strong in his "denouncement" of this hate group. He needs to step forward and put a stop to this insult to true, Christian Catholics.
