More testimonies defend Pope Pius XII

Pius XII, Mit Brennender Sorge, July 28, 1938 (excerpts):

"Whoever exalts race, or the people, or the State, or a particular form of State, or the depositories of power, or any other fundamental value of the worldly community...whoever raises these notions above their standard value and divinizes them to an idolatrous level, distorts and perverts an order of the world planned and created by God."

"None but superficial minds could stumble into concepts of a national God, of a national religion; or attempt to lock within the frontiers of a single people, within the narrow limits of a single race, God, the Creator of the universe, King and Legislator of all nations, before whose immensity they are 'as a drop in a bucket' (Isaiah 11:15)."

"The fool who has said in his heart, 'There is no God' (Psalm 13:1), goes straight to moral corruption, and the number of these fools who today are out to sever morality from religion is legion."

"The human race, the entire human race, is but a single and universal race of men. There is no room for special races. We may therefore ask ourselves why Italy should have felt a disgraceful need to imitate Germany."

"It is not correct to suppose that deported Jews are sent for labor service; the truth is that they are being annihilated." - Pope Pius XII, Second protest to the Slovak government upon learning that 52,000 Slovak Jews were marked for deportation to "labor camps" in Poland, March 14, 1942.

"He who makes a distinction between Jews and other men is unfaithful to God and is in conflict with God's commands." - Pope Pius XII, Broadcast of Vatican Radio to the people of France, June 1943.

"Tell your bosses, the Pope is not afraid of concentration camps." - Pope Pius XII, to a deputy of S.S. Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Kappler, chief of Gestapo forces in Nazi-occupied Rome, 1943.

Pope Pius XII "sent an appeal to all the religious institutes in Rome to help the Jews." How then can Keene State College suggest that the facts aren't in yet on this great Pope? The documentation you are providing is destroying the credibility and reputation of Keene State. I'm still awaiting an explanation from Keene State as to what Henry Knight meant when he stated that Church teaching has been anti-semitic.

You'll be waiting for a long time Robert. The Cohen Center isn't interested in truth. Its' interest is in using the Holocaust for political reasons and in trying to undermine the Catholic Church's credibility to promote a liberal agenda. Consider what one Cohen Center supporter wrote at a Keene Sentinel Talkback thread. This writer referred to, "..countless priests who molested thousands."

Now, there have been many victims of sexual abuse perpetrated by priests in this country. But the rate of incidence of child abuse in the Church is far lower than it is throughout society in general. Something like 1.5 - 2.5% of priests in this country having abused children. In the general population, the rate is around 5%. So there's far less abuse of children in the Church than there is in society as a whole. We must be doing something right. It's just that the Church gets all the bad press because of anti-Catholicism. If it's a priest who abuses, the media is all over it. If it's a Protestant minister or public school teacher, it's buried on page 52 of your newspaper if its covered at all.

Countless priests? There has been a rather definite and comparitively small number. The number is not "countless." Such a comment frm a Cohen Center supporter only serves to highlight the fact that anti-Catholicism is behind the push to denigrate the Church as being "anti-Semitic" or Pope Pius XII as having a questionable record with regard to the Jews.

Right Margaret. The Catholic League has addressed the very issues you bring up in your comment:

    _in_social_context.htm

Most of the abuse cases in the Catholic Church have been homosexual in nature. The John Jay Study commissioned by the U.S. Bishops addressed this fact. Does Keene State recognize this truth? And if it does, does it still consider opposition to homosexuality as a mental disorder: "homophobia"? If opposition to homosexuality is a form of mental illness - as they seem to believe at Keene State - is it wrong to oppose homosexual abuse of children? Is Keene State in favor of legislation which would "legalize" sexual relations between homosexual men and adolescent males?

How is moral opposition to homosexuality a mental illness? Can anyone from Keene State explain this?

It is significant that the whole question of abuse in the Catholic Church was brought up by a former Catholic at the Blog maintained by the Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies at Keene State College.

Is it necessary to impugn the Catholic Church while educating people about anti-Semitism? I guess some people think so.

Margaret, you couldn't be more right. There has only been silence from those at Keene State who would slander both the Church and Pius XII. But why the silence? Because, the historical record shows clearly that not only is the Church NOT anti-semitic, but she was a lone voice opposing National Socialism. The New York Times said so in 1941.

  5. Alzina, I have posted the two New York Times editorials which praised Pope Pius XII as being a "lonely voice" in the silence which had overcome Europe. Albert Einstein said that "Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign for suppressing truth." And he said this as an agnostic!

This begs the question: Why did this Nobel Prize winning physicist believe that "only the Church stood squarely" against Hitler's campaign? Is this not some sort of indictment?
