In one of his last homilies, Archbishop Oscar Romero, the martyred Archbishop of San Salvador, said: "A preaching that does not point out sin is not the preaching of the gospel. A preaching that makes sinners feel good so that they become entrenched in their sinful state, betrays the gospel's call. A preaching that does not discomfit sinners but lulls them in their sin leaves Zebulun and Naphtali in the shadow of death. A preaching that awakens, a preaching that enlightens -- as when a light turned on awakens and of course annoys a sleeper -- that is the preaching of Christ, calling, "wake up! Be converted!" this is the church's authentic preaching. Naturally, such preaching must meet conflict, must spoil what is miscalled prestige, must disturb, must be persecuted. It cannot get along with the powers of darkness and sin."
This morning I attended the 9 AM Mass at St. Joseph's Parish in Fitchburg. The "homily," which was given by Father John Hughes, M.S., a La Salette Priest, was a profound disappointment. Rather than addressing the moral crisis which has erupted in Fitchburg with the news that Planned Parenthood would be opening an office in the city with federal stimulus monies, Fr. Hughes chose to talk about the Boy Scouts and the weather. We all have our priorities.
Fr. Hughes told parishioners that Fitchburg is truly "blessed" because the city did not receive the snow which has inundated our neighbors to the south. There was no mention of Planned Parenthood's pro-abortion, anti-life, anti-family, anti-Christian agenda. Many prayer intentions were offered during the liturgy, but not one intention requesting the Lord's assistance during this moral crisis. Small wonder that the Moloch State has come to Fitchburg. Our Lady told Fr. Stefano Gobbi of the Marian Movement of Priests that, "The cause of such a vast diffusion of errors and of this great apostasy rests with unfaithful pastors. They remain silent when they should speak with courage to condemn error and to defend the truth. They do not intervene when they should be unmasking the rapacious wolves who, hidden beneath the clothing of lambs, have insinuated themselves into the flock of Christ. They are mute dogs who allow their flocks to be torn to pieces...."
The Culture of Death has come to Fitchburg. But Fr. Hughes would rather talk about the weather. God preserve us from such nonsense.
