And you thought Lance Armstrong was a hero...

A Man For All Seasons

Read about cyclist Gino Bartali, an Italian athlete who risked his own life to save Jewish people from a certain death. Because of his efforts, the Assisi Underground was a tremendous success: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gino_Bartali

A truly brave yet humble man. Thanks, Paul.

I agree Carrie. It shows the difference between a true Catholic and the pseudo-Catholicism of the SBC Cult in Richmond. The SBC Cult would have us believe that there was no Holocaust or plan to eliminate the Jewish People. If this is true, why did so many like Gino Bartali (and many priests, Brothers, Monks and Nuns) have to risk their lives to both hide Jewish people and spirit them out of Italy, Germany and many other countries?

That is an inspiring story Mr. Melanson. I saw the movie The Assisi Underground many years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it starred Gregory Peck. When I think of what Pope Pius XII must have gone through as he tried to walk a razor-thin line, my heart aches for him. If he spoke too loudly, Jews were rounded up in even greater numbers and slaughtered by the Nazis out of retaliation.

But thank God for his (and Pope Pius IX's) strong condemnations of Nazism and anti-Semitism. I pray for his cause daily.
